How To Repair Cracked Grain Handling Equipment with the glassSTEEL UV Patch

Cracked grain handling equipment can bring your operation to a halt — and traditional welding repairs need to be scheduled, are expensive, and require downtime you can't afford. The glassSTEEL UV Patch offers a fast, permanent fix you can apply yourself in the field, without heat or special tools.

What You'll Need

  • glassSTEEL UV Patch (sized to cover the crack with at least 2" overlap on all sides)
  • UV Flashlight (for indoor or low-light applications)
  • Wire brush or angle grinder
  • Acetone or degreaser
  • Gloves and safety glasses

Step-by-Step Repair Instructions

Step 1: Clean the Surface

Use a wire brush or angle grinder to remove any rust, scale, loose paint, or debris from the area around the crack. The repair surface must be clean, dry, and free of oil or grease. Wipe down with acetone and allow to dry completely.

Step 2: Assess the Damage

Measure the length and width of the crack. Select a glassSTEEL UV Patch that extends at least 2 inches beyond the crack on all sides. For larger cracks or holes, you may need to overlap two patches.

Step 3: Peel and Position the Patch

Remove the protective backing from the glassSTEEL UV Patch. Carefully position it over the crack, pressing firmly from the center outward to eliminate air bubbles. The patch is repositionable before curing, so take your time to align it properly.

Step 4: Cure with UV Light

Expose the patch to direct sunlight or use a UV Flashlight for indoor applications. The patch starts to cure in as little as 60 seconds under direct UV exposure. For full structural strength, allow 3–5 minutes of UV exposure.

Step 5: Inspect the Repair

Once cured, the patch will be rigid and bonded to the steel. Run your hand along the edges to confirm full adhesion. The repair is immediately ready for service — no waiting, no downtime.

Why glassSTEEL UV Patch for Grain Handling Equipment?

Grain bin chutes, auger tubes, and conveyor troughs take constant abrasion from grain flow. glassSTEEL UV Patch creates a hard, smooth surface that resists further wear and prevents grain from catching on rough edges. It's also food-safe once cured, making it suitable for grain contact surfaces.

For ongoing maintenance, keep a supply of patches on hand so your crew can make repairs immediately when cracks appear — before they become costly failures.
